Why go

Shanghai

Shanghai is China's most international city and the easiest introduction to the country. The colonial-era Bund faces the science-fiction skyline of Pudong across the Huangpu River, and between them sit the plane-tree streets of the former French Concession, art deco apartment blocks and the classical gardens of the Old Town.

It's also the best-connected city in China. High-speed trains reach Suzhou in 25 minutes and Hangzhou in under an hour, which makes Shanghai the natural start or end of almost any itinerary — and the easiest place to fly into.

Don't miss

  • The Bund at dusk, then a Huangpu River night cruise
  • Yu Garden and the Old Town's lanes
  • The French Concession's plane-tree streets and art deco villas
  • Pudong's observation decks — Shanghai Tower for the view
  • The Shanghai Museum, and Tianzifang's workshops
  • A day trip to Suzhou's gardens or a canal water town

How long do you need?

Three nights covers the Bund, Pudong, the Old Town and the French Concession at a relaxed pace. Add a fourth for a water-town or Suzhou day trip.
